Reallabor SPACESHARING

Description
Today, the urban demand for additional space use increases, but if cities want to avoid negative side effects on the economic, ecological and social scale, they are limited in their territorial growth. At the same time the density of space use declines – in contradiction to
goals regarding sustainability, resource efficiency and sufficiency. This is an international issue in the development of modern urban agglomerations. Within these challenges, the research project Spacesharing sets up the thesis that there is a beneficial potential of using existing built spaces more efficiently.
The space use intensity in a mixed-use urban environment is generally low and spaces tend to rest unused for certain time periods. The research project Spacesharing aims to explore the tapping of underused space resources by increasing the use intensity via the diversification of users and the mixing of different use types. The recycling and upcycling of the built environment is crucial for the reduction of the continued rate of land consumption, the primary energy demand of buildings and the negative impact of traffic.
The site for the Spacesharing pilot project is the Calwer-Kopfbau, located at Rotebühlplatz in the centre of Stuttgart.
