Technologie-Initiative SmartFactory KL e.V.

Description
The Technologie-Initiative SmartFactory KL e.V., founded in 2005 as a non-profit association, is an Industrie 4.0 network of industrial and research partners who jointly carry out projects regarding the factory of the future. SmartFactory-KL is a manufacturer-independent demonstration and research platform which is unique in the world. Here, innovative information and communications technologies and their application are tested and developed in a realistic, industrial production environment. The technology initiative, supported by the active participation of its members, has already established pragmatic solutions, first products and common standards. SmartFactory-KL intensively cooperates with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern and was appointed Mittelstand 4.0-Kompetenzzentrum Kaiserslautern (SME 4.0 Competence Center) by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in 2016. www.smartfactory.de

Reference project

Industry 4.0

Description
As a manufacturer-independent technology platform, together with our approx. 50 partners from industry and academia, we create and implement innovative factory systems following the concept of Industrie 4.0. SmartFactory-KL exhibits the world‘s first manufacturer-independent Industrie 4.0 production plant and shows just how high quality, flexible manufacturing can be efficiently implemented even for a batch size of one – regardless of whether in an existing production operation or a Green Field. Uniform interface standards enable a manufacturer-independent link to the production units, logistic systems, supply infrastructure, and IT systems. Challenging requirements already affecting production such as custom products, shorter innovation cycles, and more efficient on-site production can now be met.

Stakeholder
In 2018, the partners of our Industrie 4.0 production plant are: Belden/Hirschmann, Bosch Rexroth, B&R Automation, EPLAN Software & Service, Festo, HARTING, Huawei, IBM, KIST Europe, LAPP KABEL, METTLER TOLEDO, MiniTec, PHOENIX CONTACT, Pilz, proALPHA, SAP, Siemens, TÜV SÜD, Weidmüller

Methods
The set-up and the standards of the Industrie 4.0 production plant were developed by the industrial partners in an Innovation Workshop. The focus lies on technical topics regarding the advancement of production automation as well as the practical design of human-machine interaction. All solutions were implemented manufacturer-independently and according to fixed standards. Realizability and transferability of the solutions provided were also a main focus point. The demonstrator evolves from year to year while a qualitative assessment of the results achieved in each phase is undertaken.
